Started on Saturday with a visit to A&E. One of my 16 year old sons fell playing football, landed on his elbow. Swelled up, so no choice but to get it checked out. Just the place to be ... a Blackpool hospital, on a Saturday night, in the season! We sat for hours, as you do! Not only did we share the waiting room with the usual run of the mill minor accident patients, druggies, fight victims and drunks but we had the privilege of sharing this space with a heart attack patient. I kid you not. The poor man was in so much pain and very distraught but he was left there for 20 minutes with his anxious daughter trying to speed up the triage system that he should not have been a part of in the first place! Beggars belief. On Monday I went for an MRI scan. Arrived ten minutes early for my 6pm appointment complete with my letter only to be told that my appointment had been changed to Wednesday morning. Shame nobody bothered to let me know! After a fuss the radiographer agreed to the scan but I had to wait 45 minutes until I could be ‘fitted in’. On Tuesday the pre-op department phoned to ask if I’d had my ECG done on the 28th April, she couldn’t find the hard copy. Well yes of course I did ... duh! Oh well would you mind coming back and having another one done as I’ve looked all over and can’t find it. Do I have a choice? No ... of course not, no ECG = no op!! The form for the ECG will be left for me at the Reception desk for Thursday morning.Today I went to the Rheumatology department (Clifton) to get my DAS checked before my appointment with the consultant next month. All my bloods are up to date and questions at the ready. Feel rubbish today; feet hurt, hips sore and neck very painful. “Great Lyn your ESR is 10” No actually, I’m sero negative so you might as well ignore the blood results. “Well let’s take a look at your joints. It’s looking really good and your DAS works out at 3.95 so clearly the medication is working.” Needless to say the sore bits and the fatigue aren’t accounted for in the DAS28 so you see I’m actually fighting fit and the rest is a figment of my imagination. The best is yet to come my friends ....“I see you have an appointment on the 28th June with Dr.Sari-Kouzel.” “ No, it’s on 7th June with Dr. Rao!” “Well, this is what’s on my screen. Dr Rao is not doing the Fleetwood clinic anymore and we have a new consultant who is very nice.” “So nobody has bothered to inform me that I’m now under a different consultant or that the appointment has changed? I’m not happy about this. I’ve had enough problems with the neutropenia and stopping and starting meds over the last few months and an appointment put back since the 1st February without adding in a new doctor. And I feel b****y awful!” “Patients often feel this way when told they have a new doctor.” “I haven’t seen a rheumatologist in almost 12 months and I’ve been really ill and en route to being neutropenic again !” Now I’m in tears so all a waste of time and I leave. On the way home I go to Blackpool hospital to get the ECG redone. Guess what? No form left at the desk as promised so all the details have to be taken again. Well at least it's on it's way to surgical admissions now. I hope!As my neutrophil count is dropping again, just above minimum, I’m now waiting on a phone call to tell me whether to reduce the methotrexate. I wonder whether that will ever come? At some point I’ve got to decide what to do about my appointment on the 28th June which I can’t make anyway (uni visit for one of the twins) and do I just accept a new consultant? Stress and RA ... a wicked combination! Lyn x PS If it wasn't serious ... it would be so very funny

Oh, Lyn, what an awful palaver! When did patients cease to matter in our caring, sharing NHS? The A & E scenario was disgraceful - no-one should be waiting for triage with a heart attack, for goodness sake! Poor man, and his poor daughter. Only once have we had to attend A & E at night on a weekend - desperate!! It must be the same all over the country, though my dad didn`t have to sit - only us, while waiting for his initial examination. And the rest of your post, well, it beggars belief. It seems we are all just a number now, on a piece of paper(or computer). How difficult can it be to send out a change in appointment? Impossible if it`s for the Hearing Dept at our local hospital - my dad is always being messed around. As far as you are concerned, you need your ECG doing so that other things can fall into place - are they all just automatons, who don`t have any common sense? And of course, you must be feeling absolutely fine - your bloods say so!!!!And of course your medication is working - that`s why you are feeling on top of the world! Duh, well excuse me, you are the one who KNOWS how you feel.Just the right time to have to change consultants! The NHS is like a steeplchase - lots of barriers and hurdles to jump, and the odd water-jump in which we`re likely to drown unless someone throws us a handy lifebelt. So sorry for all the problems you`ve had Lyn.Please try not to let the b*****s grind you down. Take care, Kathleen x PS How is your son?

Hope you get something gets sorted pronto, Lyn. Have you asked about being placed on a list for a cancellation date? And, given current experience making an alternative appointment date just in case that list mysteriously disappears...... Is your GP supportive? Mine is I am so lucky with this, I really hope you get some good support somewhere, you need answers to your questions & you certainly dont need all this need on top of not feeling well... Thinking of you, stay in touch xx & hope your son's elbow not too painful x

Oh my goodness Lyn, I can FEEL your anger and frustration. i would have been in tears too. They think all we have to do with our lives is attend appointments over and over again! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Lyn, you poor poor thing. The beaurocracy and pointless time wasting drives me INSANE. I think the way you have been mucked about is a disgrace and swapping your dr and appointment without informing you is appalling. If I was that disorganised and unprofessional in my job I'd be sacked. (Actually thinking about I'm a teacher and it's hard to get rid of teachers no matter how bad they are, but you know what I mean!) Write a letter of complaint - they are going against the Patients Charter. Take care, hope it all improves Sara x

Hi Lyn
So sorry to hear all you have been going through, it is absolutely terrible. Causing this level of stress and worry only makes matters worse and a very bad combination with RA, as you say. I really think sometimes people in the NHS just think of us purely as a number and forget they are dealing with people lives, its not the case everywhere but I think it is far too common.
I really hope you are able to resolve matters very soon.
Julia xx

What a complete farce Lyn, just when you don't need it. You have soldiered on with all the ups and downs in your health thinking that there is light at the end of the tunnel, as you have an appointment with the consultant, only to be told that the appointment has been delayed and is with someone who is not familiar with your circumstances - it's a disgrace. I've found out that the only way to be heard by the NHS these days is to make a bloody nuicance of yourself. It might be worth ringing the rheumy nurse when you have had chance to compose yourself and explain your circumstances to let them know why you are unhappy about the appointment being changed. As you have to change consultants anyway, you could just ask for the very earliest appointment? (Even if they have to fit you in at the end of a clinic.) Am thinking of you.

How upsetting for you. It is quite difficult to cope with such nonsense when you are fit and well, but when you are not it makes things a thousands time worse. Hope things improve in terms of your health and receiving your treatment.
The business about the DAS seems to be a catch 22 for us sero negative types, but there quite a few of us out there so surely that should be factored into the assessment.

This is simply disgusting! The NHS at it's very worse. What's your MP like? Your hospital sounds like it needs a good kick up the a*rse! These people have no idea of the negative effect their (in)action has on their patients. We are not just customers, we are PEOPLE. How would they feel if it was a member of their family? Try to keep calm - easier said than done. lots of love, Jan xxx

Oh Lyn, that is simply appaling treatment.I think it is made worse for patients like us because we end up accessing a number of different departments usually all within a short space of time so a hitch in one area together with bad service in another, compounds itself for us. I'm sorry it's been the week from hell x x Joanna

Hi Lyn, What a terrible way you have been treated, Whatever happened to the patients charter where you have the right to see the same consultant or at least be informed of a change and time. You are so kind and helpful to others, its a disgrace being treated like that for people who are supposed to be in the CARING profession. You must invest in a crystal ball and hope that you can see into the future so a fiasco like that wont happen again. I hope your sons arm is ok and not broken. Big hugs Lorna xx

Hi! Thank you all so much for the lovely lovely replies which have really cheered me up! I don't know why I let it upset me, I already know what to expect so it should come as no surprise when things go so wrong. But I always hope that one of these days ... Ah well, one of these days. I do have a really supportive GP thank goodness and I know he will look out for me but I could really do to take him along with me to hospital appointments! There's a thought I had a call back from rheumatology and I am now neutropenic yet again, a road once travelled. Methotrexate now stopped and it seems unlikely that I will be able to go back on it. Very strange that after 12 years it has suddenly taken a dislike to me. But heyho I'll stick with the Enbrel and other bits and see what happens over the coming weeks. I still have Rituximab in my armoury of untried and untested! I have asked about staying on my own consultant's list and it has been suggested that I get in touch with her secretary and see if this would be possible. So weighing up the pros and cons before making a decision. For those who kindly asked, Ian has a badly bruised elbow, now much improved, thank you. Two years ago his twin, Jake, was sent home from the same hospital unable to walk with a supposed bruised leg. They reviewed his X-rays the following day and discovered several breaks! Come back now!! Some of you will recall the trauma of the following 12 months, the length of time it took to heal. I could see this scenario unfolding again before my very eyes but fortunately it didn't. Such relief! Doreen, Lorna feels that I should have a crystal ball. Can you please add that to the shopping list to go with my magic wand and tiara? Oooh I can't wait to try out all my new toys Thanks again everyone. To sleep perchance to dream ... Lyn x

You cried Lyn because , like most of us, life is such a struggle without having the extra complications of cancelled appointments etc! Glad to hear your son's elbow is improving , sorry about you getting neutropenia again! A crystal ball. ......you already have the wand and tiara, but ok seeing as you had a traumatic time. Mary and I have broomsticks, I suppose you'll be wanting one of those next. Doreen xx

OH gosh LYN! I have just read this post in amazement!
So glad Ian is okay- BOYS! When Marie's dear friend had major back surgery in March, in the other three beds on her ward were boys with broken legs after playing footie! I had to giggle at that.
Sorry if I have missed something but why do you need an ECG?
I will e/mail you a long mail tomorrow but please know we are praying for you and hoping all improves dramatically for you.
Much love,
Amanda
